Holiday Reading
In simpler days an after Christmas reverie could often involve pretending to continue with the novel started earlier in the holiday.
Sure, there's the frenetic making of new friends, reconnecting with old. The excitement of New Year bonfires, beach encounters, late nights, early mornings in large glassy waves.
Before that, the Christmas carolers (the local choir) who stop and sing at each house, expecting and gladly getting rewarded.
The actual day when presents are opened and a huge lunch that lasts all day.
Back gate clangs - who’s off to the beach?
Should I, or can I be bothered missing out?
Had a grand swim already today -
Seeing as the tide was just right for rollers of glass
Sweeping us shoreward.
Just one more, and I’ll be out.
But the draw of another wins yet again,
And the slap of a breaker on my calves is the thing.
